About this artwork
The artwork depicts Gabriel, a central figure in Christian tradition and the divine messenger in the Annunciation. The archangel appears with a serene expression and a slight inclination of his body, holding the lily, a traditional symbol of purity.
From a pictorial point of view, the work shows a clear influence of the Spanish Baroque, especially in the way of constructing the figure through contrasts of light and in the expressive intensity of… the gesture.
The technique relies on loose, visible brushstrokes, with layers of paint that model the figure through tonal variations rather than rigid outlines. The folds of the cloak and wings are constructed with broad gestures that suggest movement and lightness, while the luminous background allows the figure to emerge.
