About this artwork
In ‘The Living Mountain’ Nan Shepherd looks not just AT the mountain but also INTO the mountain to reveal a spiritual enlightening that comes from deep within. Hers is a silent pursuit, the remote mountains sometimes offering pure silence. This large drawn title sits over a stream of handwritten text from the book, a reminder of both the external and internal faces of the mountain.

Susie Leiper, with a unique background in formal calligraphy and a deep engagement with Chinese art, works across mediums—brushes, pens, silverpoint, and quills—on surfaces ranging from large canvases to delicate handmade books. Her semi-abstract landscapes, especially mountains, merge oil and casein paints, infusing her art with evocative textures and an undercurrent of Chinese aesthetic influence. Rich in spirituality and reverence for the written word, her works evoke a contemplative sense of awe, seeking to connect viewers with the profound beauty in nature and language.
