About this artwork
My parents always took me to my grandmother in the village during the summer holidays. These two to three months were the most significant in my life every year, filled with new experiences, discoveries, adventures, and an understanding of nature.
⠀
Imagine: my great-grandmother is quietly singing me a lullaby. Outside the window is a thick summer night full of spicy smells of herbs and flowers. It sounds understandable and incomprehensible. But… at home, it is warm, cozy, and calm. The dark silhouettes of giant poplars seem like giants guarding our old village house on the shore of the lake.
⠀
During the day, the lake is a place for fun.
⠀
At night, everything is shrouded in mystery. Great-grandmother's tales and lullabies mix with reality and dreams in the child's imagination. They seem to hint that everything in this world has a "veil of secrecy". We begin to believe that the boundaries between our world and the secret, mystical, fairy-tale world are especially shaky at night.
Born from a book-filled environment, Svetlana Rumak mediates her vision primarily through acrylics, supplemented with pencils, ink, and collages. She's forged an individualistic style, coalescing mixed media techniques within symbolism, a visual narrative reflecting upon womanhood and its many facets. Through her works, she unfolds a "fan of reality", instilling in viewers a profound contemplation on gender roles and spiritual mysticism.
