About this artwork
I painted this picture at a time when my heart was very heavy – on one of the drives over the Eifel hills and on the way to visit my mother, who was dying. The sky was wide and blue, streaked with dramatic clouds, as if it were taking a breath of its own. I had to stop. The sun was slowly sinking, its light coloring the horizon a warm orange, while a single cloud shone golden – almost like a final greeting. The trees in the foreground stood still,…
dark, silent. This picture carries everything I couldn't say at that moment: love, fear, farewell. It is my attempt to capture a fleeting moment of beauty, amidst the pain. Perhaps it was nature itself that showed me that light can also lie in letting go.
