About this artwork
This oil painting is part of the series "against the wall".
The woman remains anonymous – she is all women.
The hair is carefully styled, floral patterns.
Tension between beauty and hardness, tenderness and rebellion.
It's about the ambivalence between societal expectations of women, who are supposed to constantly bloom, beautify, and delight, yet remain trapped, with their backs to the wall. The wall is not only a backdrop, but also a symbolic… barrier; the dark wallpaper with its leaves reinforces the feeling of silent confinement, of stagnation.
The wall suggests that every generation of women begins anew at the same point, that the supposed progress is repeatedly relativized by new forms of restriction.
It speaks about the ongoing necessity of feminist work, about the beautiful and the unfair, about progress and repetition. It says: The work is not over. It says: "You must keep going."
« Germany is a rich, dark, soothing green; Italy is emotion, lust, passion, dizziness. »
By using different artistic techniques and symbolic languages from different cultures, works are created that build a bridge between people of different origins. After intensively studying classic glaze oil painting, Hirschfeld has developed her own abstract-figurative formal language that plays with geometric color harmonies. She also uses this in her textile works.
