About this artwork
In her Culture Mix series, T. Hirschfeld is currently concentrating on her Italian roots. In this work, "Nothing is as it seems", she plays with the blending of diverse cultures and skin colors, according to the motto "we are all equal". But for her it is also a journey into her past; the picture is full of private metaphorical stories. She told us one thing: as a child in Italy she always had to go to church on Sundays, this was especially important… to her grandmother. Disturbed by the crucifixion and the image of her hands and feet cut through, she always sought consolation in the image of Mary and developed a game. She took herself to stop looking at the feet and hands of Jesus and if that did happen, she immediately looked into Mary's calming face, that should neutralize the "shock". Sometimes she spent the whole mass with it.
« Germany is a rich, dark, soothing green; Italy is emotion, lust, passion, dizziness. »
By using different artistic techniques and symbolic languages from different cultures, works are created that build a bridge between people of different origins. After intensively studying classic glaze oil painting, Hirschfeld has developed her own abstract-figurative formal language that plays with geometric color harmonies. She also uses this in her textile works.
