About this artwork
Tara Donovan’s Untitled (2009) exemplifies her signature approach to material-based abstraction, where everyday objects and materials are transformed into striking visual experiences. This work, reminiscent of shattered glass or spiderwebs, is a photogram—an image created without a camera by placing objects directly onto light-sensitive paper. The stark contrast between black and white enhances the intricate, organic patterns, evoking a sense of…
both fragility and explosion.
Donovan’s work often explores themes of accumulation, repetition, and the transformation of simple materials into complex, mesmerizing compositions. In this piece, the delicate, radiating fractures seem to extend infinitely, capturing a moment of frozen impact that feels simultaneously chaotic and methodical.
