About this artwork
In this work, I have the main figure looking more like totem pole carved out of purpe-like wood. The head /skull is looking at you with just two black eye sockets. Surprisingly it has still red lips.
The body has no discernible arms and the legs seem melted into one.
The figure is escorted with fanatasy shapes. On the left and right behind the figure those shapes turn into flower-like reprensentations with the one behind the head withered and black… forming a black halo.
They all seem to be moving but are they really coming forward.
Since the beginning of 2024 my focus has been on the war and what people do to destroy their own habitat and consequently that of every other living being. At the moment I have no positive feelings about humankind therefore most of my figures are misshapen or gnawed at. I hope 'Parade' will bring an intense, contemplative energy that will provoke thought and curiosity.
Theo Overgaauw, a Dutch painter and sculptor, works primarily with pastels and oil paint, drawing on a rich education from the Vrij Academie and a masterclass with Jörg Immendorff. He embraces expressive, loose techniques layered without preliminary sketches, often shifting styles and evoking a slightly macabre, surreal edge. His recent works confront the anxieties of war, ecological collapse, and mortality, using distorted figures and skulls to channel a profound sense of urgency, loss, and existential disquiet.
