About this artwork
It started in 2024, all of a sudden I had a craving for painting skulls. The war between Russia and Ukraine, Israël and Hamas, Global warming and animals, insects and plants going extinct, major pollution on land and sea gave me an awkward feeling about painting comfortable pictures. It is not the right time for me to paint pleasant pictures.
Theo Overgaauw, a Dutch painter and sculptor, works primarily with pastels and oil paint, drawing on a rich education from the Vrij Academie and a masterclass with Jörg Immendorff. He embraces expressive, loose techniques layered without preliminary sketches, often shifting styles and evoking a slightly macabre, surreal edge. His recent works confront the anxieties of war, ecological collapse, and mortality, using distorted figures and skulls to channel a profound sense of urgency, loss, and existential disquiet.
