About this artwork
In Come to the Hyve, I explores themes of transformation, fragility, and the surreal through a richly layered composition in a dreamlike, otherworldly setting. On the right side of the canvas, a fragmented human form appears—partially torn, with a head that resembles both a skull and an insect—suggesting a state of metamorphosis or decay.
On the left, a striking vertical form resembling a totem pole rises from the bottom edge nearly to the top of… the canvas. Midway up, a rectangular shape leans against it, precariously balanced on a round element, which itself rests on an abstract, sculptural form. This cascading structure begins near the center of the work and connects visually to a circle beneath the torn body, creating a sense of tension and -imposible- interdependence between the forms. I like to play with impossible abstract forms that only look possible at first glance.
I have painted the background in a variety of swirling colors as if the background is in motion.
Theo Overgaauw, a Dutch painter and sculptor, works primarily with pastels and oil paint, drawing on a rich education from the Vrij Academie and a masterclass with Jörg Immendorff. He embraces expressive, loose techniques layered without preliminary sketches, often shifting styles and evoking a slightly macabre, surreal edge. His recent works confront the anxieties of war, ecological collapse, and mortality, using distorted figures and skulls to channel a profound sense of urgency, loss, and existential disquiet.
