About this artwork
The more we read about history of past civilisations, the more we recognise emerging patterns. Empires rise, conquer, become corrupted and then inevitably fall under the weight of that corruption.
Before the Romans there was Alexander the Great, carving a path from Macedon through Asia Minor, all the way to India with his legendary phalanxes, only to then return to the dust.
And just like Alexander’s army, Rome was also feared for her unstoppable… legions. But, like all empires throughout history, Rome crumbled under the weight of her own hubris and corruption, and the empire dissolved from within. This painting serves as a reminder that no matter great and terrifying an empire may be, past or present, they will all inevitably return to the dust.
