About this artwork
As part of a wider exploration of how so much of our lives is now mediated through the digital, this piece focuses on some of the more pernicious aspects of that relationship between our online and offline selves. It speaks to the way our online activities are mapped by algorithms in order to manipulate our behaviours, for instance through targeted adverts.
'Clickbait, Acid-dipped' is a physical artwork that takes inspiration from my digital NFT… series called 'Clickbait_ACID', which was itself derived from a physical drawing called 'Clickbait', which was a preparatory study for an element in a much larger work about the internet entitled 'Encrypted End-to-End'. In this way, 'Clickbait, Acid-dipped' belongs to a lineage of works that weaves in and out of the physical and digital realms.

« I am fascinated by how the personal and the universal relate to one another. The most deeply personal of experiences often turn out to have a profoundly universal significance; and conversely, the most general of expressions can resonate with the greatest intimacy. »
Thomas Allen (b. 1989) is a British artist whose distinctive and award-winning work explores internal landscapes. He uses techniques such as automatic drawing to tap into the unconscious, and blends abstract and representational imagery to give his artwork a dream-like quality. For Allen the creative process is a dance of agency in which the materials, the image, the imagination and even the viewer all have active roles. The work has a life of its own, which the artist does not completely control.
