About this artwork
The theme of this series is expanse. The seascape was largely abstracted for this purpose. Technically, three areas of Abstract Art are combined in each painting. Two strong opposite poles: Art Informel (Abstract Expressionism) and Concrete Art (hard-edge painting) were combined in such a way that the opposition disappeared. The beach was defined by gluing found objects. The Baltic Sea at Schöneberg Beach is the source of inspiration for this series…
of paintings. The beach, the sea, and the sky – these three elements fill specific sections of the pictorial space. If you also think of Bach's Goldberg Variations, you're in the right place.

- Works on commission
Thomas Butzlaff is a painter and sculptor. He was born in West Germany and studied fine art at the University of Cologne. He combines traditional painting techniques with random processes, drawing on abstract expressionism to create surreal, colorful worlds in which figurative and abstract forms merge. His works oscillate between human representation and landscape, exploring fantastical realities and individual mythologies. He conveys a deep emotional resonance by combining visible matter with an invisible, energetic dimension to create a unique experience.
