New pin- up pop art prints based on the photographs of Bettie Page Queen of Nylons
taken by Irwin Klaw in the 1950’s
I met Irwing's sister Paula Klaw while I was living in New York in the 1980s
and bought a collection of original photos with Bettie that is the base of these works.
Thomas Dellert
Bettie Page 1923 -2008 was an American model who gained a significant profile in the 1950s for her pin-up photos. Often referred to as the "Queen of… Pinups", her shoulder-length jet-black hair, and trademark bangs have influenced artists and fashion designers and women like Dita von Teese.
Irving Klaw 1910 – 1966 the "Pin-up King", was an influential American 1950’s merchant of fetish, and Hollywood glamour pin-up photographs and films. The time branded Klaw as a degenerate pornographer. Bettie retired from modelling soon afterwards and became religious. Klaw closed his business and burned 80% of his negatives. However, his sister Paula secretly kept some that we see today.
Thomas Dellert is an internationally renowned Swedish painter and photographer who has taken part in numerous solo exhibitions throughout the United States and several European nations. His works are featured in the permanent collections of the Holocaust Memorial Museum (Washington DC), Heinz, Mercedes Benz, Absolute Vodka and the Swedish Royal Family, to name a few. Combining satirical and historical elements, Dellert mixes painting, collage and graphic art to convey both the deep darkness and shining hope of humanity.
