About this artwork
back study 8-5-19 addresses the representation of the traditional painting motif of the nude. Informed by popular cultural references from fashion, advertising media and directly influenced by the poses of the models in Egon Schiele’s work. The use of fluid mediums such as inks, watercolours and acrylics allows for a certain element of chance during the process. Produced quickly using expressive marks and stains. Giving them an ‘imperfect’ or vulnerable…
feel, which in turn gives the work an exciting vitality and energy.

« One cannot fully know or experience the reality of another person, and that this separateness underlies our daily consciousness »
Thomas Donaldson is an experienced painter based in Thailand who has exhibited his work throughout the UK and US. He first began to take art seriously as a teenager when he discovered the simultaneously shocking and seductive works of Egon Schiele and Francis Bacon, and hasn't looked back since. Today, Donaldson composes interpretations of the human figure, especially focusing on the impermanence, fragility and beauty within our fragmented culture and the people who navigate it. Expressive marks and stains give his compositions an aspect of vulnerability, leading to an overall sense of vitality.
