About this artwork
A figurative painting with a strong political core, Thomas created this striking piece in the early 2000's as the conflict Iraq escalated and the gamesmanship of the big powers shifted and unfurled. The messages in the media of WMD's and the threats to Western democracy meant it was difficult to qualify what was true and what was imagined and slowly and surely we wandered down the dangerous path to war. A scapegoat was required after the 9/11 bombings…
and Saddam Hussein fit the bill; the move to conflict sated the desire for revenge but the consequences still resonate throughout the world today. The image here depicts a semi-naked man half cradling himself with the other hand on his heart. To the left hand side of his head two over-sized almost comically large hands are raised in the air, voting in agreement to proceed.
