About this artwork
This painting is part of a series of four. It chronicles the popular march that took place in Kaohsiung in 1979 and its consequences for the dissenting leaders. "Take this ball and unwind it all the way; when the case is done, you can join the exit by rewinding the wire. Such is the advice that according to tradition Ariane gave to Theseus.
This is a reminder of the legend of the breadcrumb trail, but also all the transcultural symbolism linked… to thread and weaving. Democratization followed the thread of its destiny and nothing could oppose the "cosmic loom". (Daoist doctrine) Visually, these balls of white fabric also come to contrast with the metal and the red thread used for the three previous works. These balls seem comfortable and soft cocoons from which almost 10 years later hatched democracy. Together they form the mathematical sign of equality, a symbol of justice between individuals.
