About this artwork
The name Lorelei initially referred to a prominent rock on the Rhine. According to legend, a mermaid sat on it. With her singing, she lured passing boatmen onto the cliffs.
She was a fair-haired girl named Loreley, who brushed her golden hair on the rock by the Rhine, and as she did so she sang in a voice so sweet that all who heard were enchanted. Many who passed were swept down the rocky ledge in the current. The Virgin was never seen up close.
