About this artwork
Self-portrait – inspired by Max Beckmann
Max Beckmann (Leipzig, February 12, 1884 – December 27, 1950, New York City) is among the most important German painters and graphic artists of the interwar period; his work can be categorized as situated between Expressionism and New Objectivity. At the beginning of his career, Beckmann enjoyed great success with Impressionist-style paintings and vehemently opposed Expressionism. It was only his experiences… as a medic in the First World War that led to a break with tradition and, consequently, to a new, more expressive style. While there are certainly points of contact in his choice of subject matter and stylistic devices, Beckmann remained a loner and pursued his own path as an Expressionist.
