OUT OF THE BOGGY PATH: The fine art print of a black and white photograph from 2015 was hand-colored in 2023 using egg white glazes and gold pigments (brush and airbrush), signed, and stamped with the artist's stamp. It was exhibited at the Rathausgalerie Odenthal, Germany, in early 2026. The image depicts a young woman in the Ecuadorian rainforest, neatly dressed, descending a muddy path and squeezing through wet leaves without getting dirty in… any way. The title "Out of the Muddy Path" represents the rural exodus of young people in many parts of the world, driven by dreams and desires. The following text is handwritten into the white border of the image: "The rainforest. The boots come off hard from the mud. She descended a muddy path, immaculate, well-styled, a gem. She disappeared on the loading area of a pick-up truck."
Thomas Ruhl works as a painter and photographer with a background in graphic design, photography, and journalism. He masterfully combines black-and-white photography with hand-colored elements, often complemented by literary texts, thereby bringing historical coloring techniques back into contemporary art. His style moves at the intersection of photography, painting, and literature, always aesthetic and critical at the same time. His works tell moving stories of people worldwide and invite the viewer to empathy, humanity, and sensitive reflection. Ruhl has received numerous international awards for his work. His pieces have been presented in group and solo exhibitions and at art fairs. After studying art, financial difficulties initially drove him into advertising. This was followed by the founding of the publishing house Port-Culinaire, which established itself at the top end of the market with a magazine and culinary books. Now he devotes himself exclusively to art.
