About this artwork
Portrait 8 began as a way to express emotion I couldn’t put into words—something between strength, release, and vulnerability. The face isn’t a specific person, but a reflection of many faces and feelings I’ve carried or witnessed. I didn’t aim for realism; instead, I wanted to break the form open and let emotion emerge through shape and color. I used angular brushstrokes and faceted forms to explore how fragmentation can still hold beauty and truth.… Each shape is deliberate—creating movement, contrast, and tension across the face. The eyes look upward, not in defeat, but in searching or quiet strength.
Color guided me more than anything else. I layered intense greens, purples, and pinks against calmer tones to let the energy rise and fall. Acrylic gave me the speed and clarity to act on instinct.
This painting is about what’s underneath—about how something can be broken and still feel whole. It’s not about perfection. It’s about honesty, emotion, and the complexity of being seen.
Born into a Vietnamese artistic lineage, Thuy Nguyen engages with mono prints, polygonal paintings, and ceramics. Utilizing an abstract approach, she combines intense pigmentation with intricate geometric forms, traversing both the traditional canvas and the digital realm to stage her exploration. Her work, a kaleidoscopic fusion of shapes and colors, pulses with the complexities of human identity and the quest for harmony with the natural world. Through her polygonal portraits, she reveals a riveting chronicle of emotions, reflecting the enduring spirit encapsulated in our continually evolving selves.
