About this artwork
Portrait 1 marks the beginning of my bold foray into faceted portraiture—a 70 x 110 cm canvas where the human face emerges through a mosaic of angular brushstrokes. Painted entirely by hand, the work features interlocking planes of saturated reds, deep blues, warm ochres, and pale skin tones.
As the inaugural piece in my new cubism portrait series, this painting explores identity not as a fixed image, but as a layered experience. The face is visible,… yet fractured—emotionally charged, yet abstracted into rhythmic geometry. Eyes and features break through the surface, but never fully settle.
The vertical format intensifies the psychological presence of the figure, creating both intimacy and monumentality. The viewer is not merely looking at a portrait—they are drawn into a shifting field of color and feeling.
As seen in my growing presence on Singulart, Portrait 1 sets the tone for a body of work where the personal becomes architectural—built from color, structure, and emotion.
Born into a Vietnamese artistic lineage, Thuy Nguyen engages with mono prints, polygonal paintings, and ceramics. Utilizing an abstract approach, she combines intense pigmentation with intricate geometric forms, traversing both the traditional canvas and the digital realm to stage her exploration. Her work, a kaleidoscopic fusion of shapes and colors, pulses with the complexities of human identity and the quest for harmony with the natural world. Through her polygonal portraits, she reveals a riveting chronicle of emotions, reflecting the enduring spirit encapsulated in our continually evolving selves.
