About this artwork
Inspired by minimal abstract painters such as Robert Ryman, combined with gestural spontaneity of Cy Twombly and Robert Rauschenberg's layering of elements and found materials. Painted having read an online article pertaining to the "ideal" physical proportions of the male physique.
This was painted during lock down, directly and spontaneously without preconception or planning, relying on instinct and experience. This creates an honest and heartfelt… composition that holds layered elements of balance and playful energy and imbalance combined. The process is all important, with it's contrasting marks "interrupting" and punctuating the underlying plane, whilst holding down the overall composition.
