About this artwork
After swimming with Orca in the Arctic and with Sea lions off the coast of Mexico, I decided to push my interactions further by transferring my drawing skills underwater. I invented my own tools to draw these animals in motion from life in the sea of Cortez, at the Sea lion colony of Los Islotes. Fully immersed and in direct contact with them, occasionally getting my pencils nibbled out of my hand, I was in awe of these graceful, playful animals.…
After a challenging week of drawing everyday underwater, I was inspired to transfer my experiences to canvas. In a complex process of combining drawings from life, film and memories, I explored a composition that captured the atmosphere of this underwater world, showing the grace and power of exceptional animals living in fragile circumstances. When predators and prey are allowed to thrive uninterrupted like in this scene, ecosystems flourish and all species benefit, including humans.
