Kimani Heart, painted in 2023, is dedicated to my son's best friend from school who died from cancer. The heart at the center of the painting is a direct trace of a heart sculpture my son made for Kimani's family in remembrance of him. This piece is a continuation of the black and white and gold series Monaghan started in 2022 which is a continuation of his… long running black and white series.
A heart with a white ribbon across it, also known as a Mending Heart, is symbolic of Healing.

Todd Monaghan explores spontaneous intuition and the subconscious mind through 'flicking, spilling, dripping, and scraping' paint into multi-layered, textural, and immersive works. The American painter and sculptor's pieces are created through impulsive movements that welcome chance and experimentation. Monaghan does not paint using an easel, instead preferring to pin his canvases to the walls of his studio. He places them on the floor and back onto the walls, searching for new discoveries every time.
