About this artwork
King - Peaceful Warrior, was created as a collaboration between Monaghan and his mentor, artist Gregoy Ilich in 2008. It is a large, unframed tapestry that is made from layered canvas and eggshells, pivotal elements in most of Monaghan's work. This piece is one of the larger "blue series" pieces and the only one that is a tapestry. If you look into the piece you can see the face of the warrior at the center of the painting.

« My work is about finding what exists in the accidental or random, finding inspiration in the dance, and celebration of the practice. This is my making process. »
Todd Monaghan explores spontaneous intuition and the subconscious mind through 'flicking, spilling, dripping, and scraping' paint into multi-layered, textural, and immersive works. The American painter and sculptor's pieces are created through impulsive movements that welcome chance and experimentation. Monaghan does not paint using an easel, instead preferring to pin his canvases to the walls of his studio. He places them on the floor and back onto the walls, searching for new discoveries every time.
