About this artwork
A couple - elegant, composed and intimately connected seem to be walking on air above a winding, rural path, Their posture is calm, almost matter-of-fact, The man in the bowler hat has his arm around the woman and her arm rests on the man's back. Her dress catches the eye immediately, like a flicker of sunlight against the muted sky. Below them, a dirt path cuts through thick, wind-swept greenery, leading toward soft, rolling hills. The path suggests… a journey, something grounded and real, yet the figures have literally risen above it. Are they escaping from the many troubles of today's world? Rising together in love? That story is for the viewer to conjure. The soft, almost hazy sky reinforces the feeling that they're moving into a space beyond consequence, beyond gravity and perhaps, beyond the noise of life. This painting is a poetic statement about connection and elevation - how two people, together, can rise "above it all".
« I love to paint the impossible, or at least the highly improbable. I want my work to make you think, if it brings a smile to your face, that's even better. »
Tom Blood is an award-winning American artist whose paintings have been exhibited in the United States. Inspired by surrealism, especially by the works of René Magritte, many of his paintings have featured a man in a bowler hat, which is part of his on-going homage to the Belgian master. Blood enjoys painting "what seemed like it couldn't be, only it looked like it actually was".
