About this artwork
The Horse and Groom pub is a historic music venue and drinking establishment in Shoreditch. Currently it is surrounded by huge new developments engulfing the entire block where it is based, which begged the question, what saved it from demolition?
In 2013 it was under threat from development, but the remains of Shakespeare’s first theatre, the Curtain Theatre, was found below it. It is meant to be the first theatre in which he performed Romeo and… Juliet. The front of the building was where the entrance to the theatre was and the rest is behind the pub, which is now being excavated. As a result, all three of these buildings became protected, literally saved by Shakespeare.
