About this artwork
This artwork was made from various sketches made on location in Chicago during my visit which also took me to Milwaukee where I did several artist talks. This composition shows my keen interest in visual elements such as perspective and light, as the view from the edge of Chicago’s lake from draws the viewer in towards the city. An urban scene, it also features an underpass- a feature that I am always drawn to due to its contrasting shapes and shadows,…
and the towering skyscrapers beyond. On the left, the Art Institute of Chicago just comes into view- one of my favorite art galleries!

« My artworks echo my love and appreciation to the fundamental elements of painting, but also seek to resonate with the suggested beauty of place. »
Tom Voyce is an established UK painter with international exposure. His subject matter comprises of a variety of different themes such as airports, railway stations, roads and bridges and other places of transit. Voyce's compositions consistently demonstrate an interest in the formal elements of composition: structure, perspective, shape and light. His paintings are accounts of fleeting moments within a landscape; the fall of light on a building, or the shadows cast by a motorway flyover. The strength in these pieces lies not in their faithful depiction of a landscape, but in their suggestion of a sense of place, of being present within a particular space at a particular moment.
