About this artwork
This painting was created whilst on a residency in Auckland at Corban Estate Arts Centre. The suburb of Henderson became a constant subject matter for me, especially during the mornings and evening when the long shadows cast themselves over the pavements and roads.
Taken from a series of drawings, 'Henderson 2' is the start of a a mini series in this part of West Auckland where I began experimenting with red under-painting and compositions with… flat foregrounds.

« My artworks echo my love and appreciation to the fundamental elements of painting, but also seek to resonate with the suggested beauty of place. »
Tom Voyce is an established UK painter with international exposure. His subject matter comprises of a variety of different themes such as airports, railway stations, roads and bridges and other places of transit. Voyce's compositions consistently demonstrate an interest in the formal elements of composition: structure, perspective, shape and light. His paintings are accounts of fleeting moments within a landscape; the fall of light on a building, or the shadows cast by a motorway flyover. The strength in these pieces lies not in their faithful depiction of a landscape, but in their suggestion of a sense of place, of being present within a particular space at a particular moment.
