About this artwork
This artwork was created from several drawing studies made on location on the North Cornwall coast during the early Spring. I was teaching workshops locally, and found time to take a coastal walk along the cliff edges that were being battered by the wind, but showered with fantastic evening light.
Wheal Coates itself is a former tin mine situated on the cliff tops between Porthtowan and St Agnes, and I did several studies in the studio but this… is the only one that made it to its final stages. I was particularly attracted to the strong, rugged structural elements, and how the contrasted with the curved coastline.

Tom Voyce is an established UK painter with international exposure. His subject matter comprises of a variety of different themes such as airports, railway stations, roads and bridges and other places of transit. Voyce's compositions consistently demonstrate an interest in the formal elements of composition: structure, perspective, shape and light. His paintings are accounts of fleeting moments within a landscape; the fall of light on a building, or the shadows cast by a motorway flyover. The strength in these pieces lies not in their faithful depiction of a landscape, but in their suggestion of a sense of place, of being present within a particular space at a particular moment.
