About this artwork
The Artist travelled many times to India and was fascinated by the energy and sensory overload that can be found there. This monotype is of an old man who had a stall at the side of the road and sold tea (chai). He was called a “chai wallah” .
Watson was particularly captivated by his sinewy arms and the strength of this diminutive old man who never stopped brewing, preparing , boiling and washing cups with a speed which was incredible to witness.… This monotype is about compressed energy and for many years Watson thought it his best work.

« I am a traditional figurative artist working within a modern aesthetic. »
Tomas Watson is a prize-winning painter, draftsman, and printmaker based in the United Kingdom whose works have been exhibited in England, Greece, and the United States. He cites drawing as being fundamental to every aspect of his art. While there are no particular theories or messages in his compositions, there is, however, subtle symbolism. Watson's diverse painterly pieces are created with oils, charcoal, gouache, and pencils on paper or canvas.
