After thirty years away, I returned to São Paulo to find a world without a horizon. For months, I was trapped in a visual diet of asphalt and cement, my perspective boxed in by the vertical weight of skyscrapers. To find air, I had to look up. I began to seek out the city’s high points, not just to see the sunset, but to witness the only part of this megalopolis that refuses to be tamed: the clouds.
What started as a search for a lost horizon became… a deep fascination with impermanence. My art is the intersection of these two worlds: the rigid, unyielding cement of São Paulo below, and the fluid, ever-changing grace of the clouds above.
Tomaz Favilla is an Anglo-Brazilian digital artist with roots in music and visual arts, educated at Brighton University and the Escola Pan-americana de Arte e Design. His technique involves digitally manipulating original photographs, emulating fine art painting styles while embracing intentional image error and glitch. He strongly believes that images printed on canvas deliver the best results. It gives viewers the experience of having to "look again" to check whether it is printed or every detail made by a physical brush. It is truly, unique. Visually, technically and soulfully. His works undoubtedly transmit feelings. Through his experimental process, he explores the cycles of creation and destruction to depict silent equilibrium amidst chaos. His artworks powerfully convey both the striking beauty and melancholy of transformation, offering viewers a sense of profound stillness and hope within tumultuous reality. His work has become part of his constant path to acquire inner peace.
