About this artwork
This painting is from my black and white series entitled "Very Far Away".
Each painting is a celebration of adventure and exodus. The figures travel through valleys, hills, plains, mountains, ridges, and volcanoes. They symbolize the sum total of our past experiences and future trials. The relief of the canvases is greater than before. They resemble fragments of landscapes. I invite the viewer to join the characters' journey by losing themselves… in these worlds.
Having traveled extensively, it was important to me to address the subject of displacement. Being away from home, whether by choice or necessity. In today's world, it's one of the major challenges of our time. With this series, I wanted to question our relationship with nature, distance, memory, and identity.
Tommy Knuts is an artist based in Lille, in the Hauts-de-France region. A jack-of-all-trades by nature, his work is multidisciplinary. His main mediums of expression include canvases, murals, sculptures, and ceramics.
Through impulsive and automatic research, his hodgepodge of characters and landscapes emerge as an expression of his deepest reflections. Connecting things and beings in light of the bonds that unite them. Freezing the emotions that come alive through encounters, capturing those moments when life expresses itself and astonishes us. Between wonder and joie de vivre, but also fears and concerns, Tommy's work is an instinctive need to put his moods and emotions on paper.
He seeks a vibration and a visual balance through his tangles of forms, which deliberately complicate the reading. Chaotic, his works come to question our human relationships and our freedoms.
