About this artwork
I envisioned the concept as a "Fusuma," a picture, like a wall, equally viewable from both sides. Transparent enough to allow a view through, yet still dividing the space. I painted on the floor with a brush and sweeping strokes before mounting the sewn-together fabric onto an "embroidery frame" made from four roof battens. I simply wedged this between the floor and the ceiling's supporting beam. From then on, a second pair of hands had to help (a…
stroke of luck!), resulting in just over 300 hours of hand stitching. The drawing emerged stitch by stitch with threads that I continuously combined, much like mixing gouache or layering pencil strokes. One hand to "draw," the other to indicate where I wanted the nails to reappear. In the upper section, another landscape appears when the lights are turned off, which I embroidered with fluorescent thread.
