Like a veil or fabric, white lies over black and allows what lies behind it to shine through.
The white, diaphanous materiality causes the black forms underneath, which are strong in themselves, to appear fragile. This fragility is inherent in the entire picture. There are two structural forms that meet and that influence each other. The top layer dominates and determines the image. The contrast of a thin membrane-like skin, which moves horizontally,… to the compact, black, thick bar-like surfaces that grow vertically in height determines the tension in the picture.

The German artist Uwe Beyer, born in 1959, lives in Coswig, near Dresden, and in Düsseldorf. He studied at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle (1988–1993). Uwe Beyer's paintings emerge more from mindfulness than from control. The material is allowed to move, resist, and settle. Form is not imposed but develops organically—stabilizing briefly before dissolving back into openness. Each work exists in a tension between presence and withdrawal, density and emptiness. It exists as a self-contained object while simultaneously eluding complete visibility. Instead of composing images, his practice creates the conditions for their emergence. These paintings do not represent the world.
