About this artwork
"Poorly Maintained Studio Floor" is the archetype of the series of the same name. It is also the first work in this series to have been painted with this very particular technique of monumental printing using tarpaulin. Layer after layer, I paint on the tarpaulin then stamp the result onto the canvas. This work is the slow product of 18 successive layers. of the volcano, the "Piton de la Fournaise" concerning the red and yellow ochre tones. The beeswax that protects the work also comes from local beehives, which makes this work a real imprint of this little piece of France in the Indian Ocean.

Victor Abel, a Canadian artist living in Réunion Island, explores the relationship between material, gesture, and light. His work, rooted in research on colors, shapes, and contrasts, is characterized in particular by the use of metal supports and gold leaf gilding. Through his works, he questions the viewer's perception, playing on the effects of depth and movement.
Trained in both traditional techniques and contemporary approaches, he makes his own paints from natural pigments and experiments with processes to bring to life compositions where abstraction dialogues with symbols.
