About this artwork
This piece was born from the need to strip away all embellishment. I decided to work with reclaimed wood because industrial materials already carry their own history of wear and tear. The background is an absolute, dense black, functioning as a void that highlights what truly matters: the rawness of the message.
At the top, it is that representation of the loss of savagery, the submission of instincts to fit into a structure.
The word SLAVE: It… functions as the direct diagnosis, without kind metaphors or beating around the bush.
Below, the dollar sign enclosed in a loop of arrows represents that eternal return, the closed circuit of consumption and work from which it seems impossible to escape.
Víctor Portillo is a self-taught painter specializing in oil paint, with exhibition experience in local galleries and fairs. He works with a mix of materials, applying layers of concealment and revelation, combining realism with brushstrokes that distort and cover his spectral figures. His works integrate deliberate imperfections, jagged edges, and symbols into compositions that invite contemplation. Through his paintings, he seeks to convey the fragility of identity, silence, and the mystery of time, generating a profound sense of introspection and emotional refuge.
