About this artwork
In „The Pull“, I wanted the architecture to function not as a fixed structure, but as a field of attraction. The shadowed arcade holds the viewer within its depth, while the repeating arches, columns, and bands of warm light guide the eye toward a small orange-red marker in the distance.
The figures remain only partly defined, as though they are moving through the space rather than fully occupying it. I built the surface on black-primed canvas using… textured paste, oil pastels, and oil paint. The relief allows me to layer colors and conceal recognizable forms within them. In this way, I convey how everything flattens and seems to disappear in shadow against the intense light.
The contrast between dense shadow and dissolving light creates the central tension of the painting: the bright light tempts us to leave the safe, yet leveling, shelter of the shadows.
