About this artwork
Title: 5th Layer.
This piece is the 5th in a series of works using shape and colour that come before in the series. This piece has evolved in composition to a more elongated sculpture.
Some of the forms have a 'floating' quality to them, this is created by a small wood pedestal fixed between the main piece and the underside of the 'floating forms'.
The piece works equally well in vertical or horizontal, hardware for hanging in both orientations… is installed.
This piece measures:
Height: 13 1/2 inches (34cm)
Width: 46 1/2 inches (118cm)
Depth: 1 1/2 inch (4cm)
Two recessed keyhole slots are installed on the back for the option of horizontal or vertical. The piece is ready to hang with just one screw in a wall. The keyhole hanging method also allows the piece to hang flush and secure to the wall.
Made of Birch ply
Painted in acrylic
The piece is signed and dated on the reverse

« Find the center of your niche and build a bubble around it. Let the light in and out. »
Vince Smith is an experienced sculptor based in the United Kingdom whose works have been exhibited in England. He cites "anti-painting" as being at the core of his artistic practice, as his vibrant sculptural pieces can be hung vertically. Smith is fascinated by the many possibilities in varying depth and overall shape, particularly when set against the "very stayed practice of painting on a square". He primarily creates with wood and acrylics.
