About this artwork
In this artwork, I merge collage and painting to create an intriguing visual whole. A bold gradient of earthy colors, dominated by orange and purple hues, immediately draws the eye. Layers of torn paper and posters provide a dynamic texture, revealing fragments of text and images that evoke a sense of urbanity. The reclining figure at the bottom of the composition adds a human and narrative dimension, contrasting with the more rigid abstraction of… the geometric forms. The contrasts between smooth and textured elements, along with the judicious use of negative space, demonstrate a thoughtful consideration of balance and juxtaposition. This contrast, combined with the richness of the materials, encourages the viewer to explore the multiple layers of underlying meaning. The work thus proposes a dialogue between reality and abstraction, urban past and artistic present.
Vincent Carpentier is a self-taught artist whose practice emerged from street photography and evolved toward painting and collage, especially with found posters. He employs spontaneous techniques, often painting with his fingers and integrating tactile scraps of urban life, rooted in a style reminiscent of urban art. His works vibrate with sensitivity and raw spontaneity, delving into the themes of migration, wandering, and the longing for elsewhere. His art pulsates with deeply felt emotions, evoking both the intensity of human struggle and the profound empathy born of lived experience.
