About this artwork
The image is a vibrant portrait of a young man against a collage background, imbued with cultural elements and touches of urban art.
I was inspired for this portrait by a Nubian Egyptian, a felucca sailor, whom I met in Aswan, a Reggae enthusiast.
He wears a colorful headband and a black t-shirt adorned with an image paying homage to Rastafari culture, against a textured collage background of torn paper and yellowed posters suggesting an urban… environment. He is duplicated in a simplified manner, his hand reaching towards himself.
Vincent Carpentier is a self-taught artist whose practice emerged from street photography and evolved toward painting and collage, especially with found posters. He employs spontaneous techniques, often painting with his fingers and integrating tactile scraps of urban life, rooted in a style reminiscent of urban art. His works vibrate with sensitivity and raw spontaneity, delving into the themes of migration, wandering, and the longing for elsewhere. His art pulsates with deeply felt emotions, evoking both the intensity of human struggle and the profound empathy born of lived experience.
