About this artwork
Slice of life in Cotignac (or Market scene in Cotignac, Var)
This scene, although inspired by a photograph taken in Cotignac, is largely a product of the imagination. The photograph served as a starting point, but I quickly distanced myself from the initial realism to develop a freer and more vibrant subject.
The first version, very faithful to the original photograph, proved too descriptive and detailed. I then chose to offer a more suggestive… interpretation, focused on the movement, dynamism, and atmosphere of the place. The left side of the composition, for example, doesn't exist at all in the original photo: it's entirely invented to enhance the balance and energy of the scene.
Vincent Couppey, a figurative painter, focuses on depicting street scenes, landscapes, seascapes, and figures. His work is informed by photographic notes, plein air painting sessions, and careful observation of everyday life. He seeks to interpret what he sees rather than faithfully reproduce it, giving his works a sensitive and personal dimension.
His style is close to a post-impressionist sensibility, based on a search for light, a dynamic composition, a desire to suggest rather than describe.
He works primarily with acrylics, which are appreciated for their speed and flexibility, but he also uses oil, pastels or inks depending on the expressive needs of the subject.
