About this artwork
I met this chanson performer at New York City Marble Cemetery, transplanted her to Pack Slip in the South Street Seaport area, and placed The Paris Cafe behind her. All human characters I paint or draw are people I’ve met in reality. Inclusion of these people into my art makes them very special to me, this is why their portraits tend to resemble icons at times. None of them are aware of the part they play in my art and, since I see them daily on…
the walls of my studio, in my life. When I bump into them accidentally on the streets or on trains, I realize that they are not strangers to me anymore.
I like to think that, by means of my art, these people are given yet another chance to get memorialized as a part of the gigantic ever-changing grotesque called New York City.
