About this artwork
Multiple times between 2018 and 2020 the artist spent time working and documenting specific sites for painting exactly as Claude Monet did, a century before. At Mousseaux-sur-Seine, Sleeth worked from the river's edge - finishing in the studio - on early morning variations of a peaceful, harmonious, almost-idyllic scene and moment. There is an ambiguity to the result, as often with Sleeth's paintings ; close-up, torn collaged papers, spraypainted…
and scribbled forms resembling graffiti, all make the image in a masterly play of tonality and atmospherics.
