About this artwork
When drawing the figure I use materials that allow fast intuitive permanent mark making. This gives a narrow margin for error and the economy it necessitates as a reductive process; filters the visual elements down to the essential. I try to work as quickly as possible to allow for a strong emphasis of spontaneity and gesture. Keeping the vital and direct qualities found in a sketch, I avoid conscious planning (designing) which for me then becomes…
a rendered, overworked and stagnant piece. It’s amazing to think so few brush strokes can show a better sense of the spiritual human essence than any type of exact drawing or likeness could ever give it.
