About this artwork
“Growing up where I did, you learned early never to hope for too much. People in the neighbourhood would go their whole lives and never see any colour. Sometimes folks from out of town would come visit, and couldn’t believe we survived here, asked us how we did. ‘Just keep your head down and don’t get your hopes up,’ is what we told ‘em.
“And then one day, something changed. I don’t know if it was in my environment, or if it was in me, but… something changed. Suddenly, I saw the colours in the world...was the colours in the world. And they were beautiful, you know? But fragile. Fleeting. Like they didn’t really belong in this place...which made it all the more incredible. It gives me hope.”
