About this artwork
Inspiration Between Sky, Beach, and Sea
For me, Ameland is much more than just a Wadden Island. It’s a place where I can endlessly enjoy the vast sandy beaches, the rolling dune landscapes, and the infinite horizon above the North Sea. Here, on the northern side of the island, lies the breathtaking nature reserve 't Oerd. A place where peace and tranquility reign, and where I truly feel at home.
As a plein-air painter, this is the ideal environment… for me. The shifting cloudscapes, the play of light on the water, and the rugged landscape provide an endless source of inspiration. Yet, working on large panels on-site is quite a challenge—the wind would carry my canvas right over the dunes. That’s why I make countless sketches and studies on location, which later come to life in my studio as full-fledged paintings.
« Tension between freedom and threat can be read in my impressionism-inspired style. »
