About this artwork
One of his friends was a Zen monk. When he was young, he often went to his Zen temple in Kyoto to do zazen and often discussed Zen teachings with the monk. During zazen he experienced that when he unified his mind, the energy of the universe entered his mind as chi(気). And he thinks that if you draw a picture of the inner meaning of Zen, it will be a circle. The circle is the harmony and the root. The great cosmos is a circle, as are the planets…
and their orbits, and the small is made up of circles, all the way down to the cells of living organisms. That is why he always draws circles in his paintings. This painting is a representation of the circle itself on canvas.
