About this artwork
“Blackout” is a portrait of inner exhaustion, of silence after explosions, and of darkness that has become part of everyday life in Kyiv. The painting emerges from the experience of living through winter in a city under constant attacks, enduring cold, and prolonged outages of electricity, water, and heating. When the temperature drops to minus 16°C, darkness is no longer only physical — it becomes emotional.
“Blackout” is not only about the absence… of electricity. It is about a human condition shaped by prolonged darkness — and about a quiet, persistent hope that the war will end, and that light will return not only to homes, but to lives.
Yuliia Didevych is a painter and conceptual artist with an academic background from the National Academy of Arts in Kyiv, seamlessly integrating her expertise in fine arts and restoration into her practice. She employs a captivating blend of modernism, impressionism, and realism, recently embracing minimalism to highlight essential forms, atmosphere, and clarity. Through her explorations of the female figure, national identity, and traditional genres, her artworks radiate deep honesty and emotional resonance, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in feelings and memories beyond words.
